Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Teens
13-19 years old
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Teens is an evidence-based treatment designed to help adolescents who struggle with intense emotions, impulsivity, mood instability, behavioral issues, and challenges in relationships. Adapted specifically for teens, DBT provides practical, skills-based strategies to improve emotional regulation, increase distress tolerance, and build more effective communication and decision-making.
Our program teaches four core skill areas—mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness—in a way that is developmentally appropriate and relevant to the challenges teens face in their daily lives. Teens learn how to better understand their emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, and navigate social and family relationships with greater confidence and stability.
A key component of DBT for Teens is family involvement. Caregivers are included in the treatment process to learn the same skills, improve communication, and create a more supportive and structured environment at home. This collaborative approach helps reduce conflict, strengthen relationships, and support lasting change beyond the therapy setting.
At ILR, DBT for Teens is delivered as a fully adherent program, including individual therapy, skills training, and access to 24/hr phone coaching to support real-life application of skills. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to individualize each teen’s treatment plan, ensuring care is targeted, coordinated, and responsive to their unique needs.
