Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C)
6 - 12 years old
Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C) is an evidence-based treatment designed specifically for children who struggle with intense emotions, behavioral dysregulation, and difficulty managing frustration. Adapted from standard DBT, DBT-C teaches children practical skills to improve emotional regulation, increase flexibility, and reduce impulsive or disruptive behaviors.
A central component of DBT-C is active parent involvement. Caregivers are coached alongside their child to respond effectively to emotional outbursts, reinforce skill use, and create a structured, supportive environment that promotes lasting change. Through this collaborative approach, families learn how to break patterns of escalation and build more effective communication and connection.
DBT-C focuses on developing core skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—presented in a developmentally appropriate and engaging way for children. With consistent practice and support, children gain greater control over their emotions and behaviors, leading to improved functioning at home, in school, and in social settings.
