Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
for children 2 - 7 years old
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed for young children who exhibit behavioral challenges such as defiance, aggression, emotional dysregulation, or difficulty following directions. PCIT focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship while equipping caregivers with effective, real-time strategies to improve behavior and increase cooperation.
In PCIT, caregivers are actively coached by a trained therapist during live interactions with their child. Using in-the-moment guidance, parents learn how to reinforce positive behaviors, set consistent limits, and respond calmly and effectively to challenging situations. This structured, skills-based approach helps reduce disruptive behaviors while building a more secure, positive connection between parent and child.
PCIT is divided into two phases: one focused on enhancing the relationship through positive attention and connection, and the other focused on establishing clear expectations and consistent discipline. With practice and support, families experience improved communication, increased confidence in parenting, and meaningful, lasting changes in their child’s behavior across home, school, and social environments.
