Many people think of wellness as meaning that they’re not physically sick. In reality, being well means a lot of different things. Wellness includes being happy, healthy, satisfied with life, and having purpose. There are many different domains of wellness, but the main areas of wellness include emotional, physical, social, occupational, and environmental. Here are some tips to improve your wellness in these different areas:
Eat healthy, but be aware of possible nutritional deficiencies. Did you know it was possible to eat healthy and still be unhealthy? Sometimes we might intend to eat healthy, but in the process we accidentally miss out on important vitamins and minerals. It’s important to learn about the foods you eat, so as to eat a balanced diet and not miss out on important nutrients that your body needs.
Exercise. Exercise has numerous benefits for not only for physical health, but also for mental health. Even one workout has been shown to improve wellness, and has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression. Exercise can take many forms, like swimming, riding a bike, or even walking.
Get enough sleep. Sleep is an important part of wellness that many people take for granted. Not getting enough sleep can make you irritable, foggy, and have trouble paying attention throughout the day. These side effects can impact many areas of wellness, such as social, physical, emotional, and occupational. In addition, lack of sleep has been associated with isolation, social alienation, and loneliness.
Tell yourself something positive. When we perceive our self, life, and the world negatively, we end up viewing all our experiences as negative. We may even try to find ways to confirm our negative views. Trying to view yourself and things around you in a positive way can help create a habit of positive thinking, which can help increase your emotional wellness.
Be present in the moment. Being aware or mindful of the present moment can help you let go of negative feelings that may be weighing on you. One way to do this is by paying attention to your physical senses: taste, smell, sounds, physical feelings, and sight. For example, pay attention to the colors and shapes of things around you as you go for a walk, or focus on the taste and smell of your food while eating.
Take breaks. It sometimes seems impossible to take a break from a stressful situation. But oftentimes the best thing to do is to step back and take a break until you’re feeling better. A simple and quick break you can do is deep breathing exercises. To do this, close your eyes and take deep breaths. Count to four as you inhale, hold the breath in for a count of four, and exhale for four.
Find a balance between work and the rest of your life. It can be very difficult to balance your work life, home life, social life, and self-care, however maintaining this balance is critical to your wellness. A lack of balance can cause you to be overly stressed or burnt out, which can make it very difficult to function at work, affect your personal relationships, and decrease your overall happiness and well-being.
Do things for others. Studies have demonstrated that doing things for others has a positive impact on how you feel about yourself. Helping others can also help build various social and emotional skills, allow you to develop connections with others and in your community, and give you a sense of purpose. Volunteering at a local school, religious organization, animal shelter, or homeless shelter are great ways to get involved in the community and help others.
